How To Create The Perfect Kids Room

Throughout our lives, the bedroom serves as a safe haven where we can relax and recharge. This room is especially important during our younger years. We all remember running off to our rooms when we were upset, making secret phone calls to a crush, or dramatically throwing ourselves onto the bed after a bad day.

For your child, their bedroom is the most important room in the house. It represents a space that is entirely their own—a place for privacy and self-expression. We’ve put together some suggestions to help you create the perfect kids’ room, right before they put their stamp on it by tossing clothes all over the floor.

TODDLERS

Their first room! This is an exciting step in their development and a relief for parents who can finally look forward to a decent night’s sleep.

Depending on the space you have available, this room could be solely for sleeping or a place where your toddler can play.

Whichever you choose, you’ll want a room that can grow with your child. Consider what they need in their room now and in the future. How about an extendable bed to give them room to grow? Pair this with a wardrobe and cubbies for storing clothes and toys, and perhaps a small bookcase for all those bedtime stories. Small child-sized furniture frees up space for dressing and playing. Having separate areas for these activities helps your child stay organized, and child-height storage encourages tidiness from a young age.

Ensure your toddler’s room is full of colour! Children see colour more vividly than adults and need this sensory input to activate their brains and help them learn about the world. Most children’s furniture comes in a multitude of colours, and pairing these with fun bedding can make a child’s room a more enjoyable place to be, making bedtime easier.

As your child grows, their personality will begin to shine through, allowing you to craft a theme for their room. Do they love dinosaurs? Wildlife? Football? Princesses? There’s a style for all of them. Get your child involved in designing their room, and let them choose a few finishing touches that they can truly call their own.

For those seeking a dreamy, fairytale-inspired room, consider soft pastel colours with one bold accent, such as dusty pink, soft white, and a striking navy blue. Create a royal look with a faux four-poster bed using a canopy and sheer curtains—great for making a small room feel grand. This setup not only looks fantastic but also gives your child a cosy den-like space and helps block out the sun on bright mornings.

Keep things tidy with a wooden chest for toys or out-of-season clothes. If it’s the right size, it can also double as a seat for sleepovers or a place to sit at the vanity.

Create an out-of-this-world room with a space theme. Gone are the days of glow-in-the-dark stars; now you can use a projector lamp! We suggest keeping the ceiling flat and white for the best projection. For daytime, invest in a space-themed ceiling light.

Keep the base colour neutral—white or grey—so you can really go wild with the details, like a space-themed mural wall and galaxy bedding.

Opt for minimal furniture with a sci-fi vibe, such as a chrome, industrial-style bed and desk. If the room still needs some softening, consider a planet-themed rug or make space in a cabinet for NASA memorabilia or a moon lamp.

TWEENS

As school becomes more important and your child moves up to high school, they may want to switch up their style or, if space allows, move into their own room after sharing with siblings.

It’s time to get a desk. Where they might have had a small homework station before, your tween may now need a full-sized desk. If space is an issue, consider a high sleeper—a bunk bed with a desk underneath. This is a great way to have a full-length desk for homework and gaming, as well as a place to sleep.

For older or taller tweens, you may want to separate the bed and desk. There are plenty of ways to make a desk more fun and reflective of their personality. Add a pinboard or pegboard to display achievements, photos, and notes.

As your kids enter their teens, they’ll likely have their own styles they want to explore. The teenage years can be challenging, so let them express themselves as they find their style. Involve them in decorating and choosing furniture, which will set them up well for creating their own homes in the future.
