The Ashby’s Self Build Story

We returned to the Ashby home recently to see how Terry and Carol were settling in their new self build home. The Ashby’s have now lived in their home for 2 happy years.

The Ashby’s began their self build project in March 2020, moving in February 2021. Despite some struggles during the lockdown, the good summer contributed to a smooth build. Thanks to their previous home nearby, they could keep an eye on things and we helped to keep them updated throughout the process.

The Ashby’s are one of the earlier examples of our self builds, so we achieved a lot building their home, and we also learnt a lot from the process that we now take to our new projects, to make them better than ever.

While visiting we asked the Ashby’s some questions about their process and how they feel about their home after 2 years.

How did you feel about the whole project?

“We were happy with the end product, extremely happy”.

Carol was smiling, it was nice to see how genuinely she felt, despite being put on the spot.

We spoke about how a self-build differs from their past experience. They both have had homes bought the more traditional way, with a viewing of an already established home, designed by, and decorated by, the previous owners.

How does the house make you feel?

“From day one you usually get a feel for it but with a new project that can be harder. But once we came into this house, it felt like home”.

The self-build process gave them a chance to choose everything from the ground up, inside, and out. Their home is exactly their own, but this process meant waiting for the grand reveal. But they assured us, it was worth the wait.

Carol, unfortunately, spent some time in the hospital.

“When I was in hospital, all I thought about was going home. When I walked through that door I felt relief, it’s comfortable, it’s home.”

We try our best to make sure our customers feel looked after even after the handover. How has the aftercare been? Our main goal is to make sure our customers know we will support them into the future. So, our support and care don’t end at handover. Dean, our director, worked with the Ashby’s personally in those earlier days.

“Dean never abandoned us; he calls to ask how we are. We became friends really, he’s very kind”.

Terry and Carol remain in contact with us and we couldn’t be more glad to have worked with them.
